Curriculum
In Year 3 we learn lots of exciting and new things across all areas of the Curriculum.
Literacy
We will be introduced to challenging books through modelled and shared and guided reading. We use a wide range of banded reading schemes during guided reading to develop our reading strategies. We are also introduced to fiction and non-fiction books and plays. We love using a variety of websites to extend our reading and comprehension skills. We participate in lots of talking and listening activities. We continue to build on Phonics using the Sounds ~Write Programme which has been introduced in Yr1 and Yr2. We follow the Prim-Ed Spelling Programme along with additional resources. We learn to write in lots of different forms eg instructions, recount, narrative and report.
Numeracy
We will be learning lots about Processes in Maths, Number, Data Handling, Measures and Shape and Space through the use of the Power Maths Programme. We cover a range of different topics and activities during whole class teaching and Task board activities. We love taking part in mental math games and problem solving activities. We incorporate iPads, interactive white board, chrome books and games into our task board.
World Around Us
Here are some of the exciting topics we can look forward to studying this year.
- Halloween
- Home Sweet Home
- Christmas
- Winter
- It’s A Bug’s Life
- Spring
- Them Bones, Them Bones
- Summer
During Learning Centres we complete lots of STEM experiments and investigations to test things out and discover new facts. Remember to ask your child about what they have been learning!
Personal Development and Mutual Understanding
Through PDMU we are given lots of opportunities to explore our personal and emotional development. We identify how to keep healthy and stay safe and we also explore our relationships with our family, friends, the school community and the wider community. We are using the PATHS Programme in PDMU and we love selecting the Child of the Day and sharing our compliments with them.
P.E
We will have P.E. every Thursday. There will be opportunities for the children to participate in lots of activities and games including unihoc, dodgeball, gymnastics, football, rounders and basketball. The children can wear in a pair of shorts, leggings or skinnies along with their school polo shirt and jumper. Please make sure they wear suitable trainers and can tie their own laces.
The Arts
In Year 3 we participate in a variety of music, dance, drama and art activities that we can complete through our cross curricular topics. Lots of our art work is completed during Learning Centres.
Religion
We follow the Grow in Love Programme, and we learn about how important God is to us in our lives. We will learn about some of the saints and the different celebrations throughout the church year. We learn to recite prayers including: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, Grace Before Meals and Grace After Meals. Fr. McAnnely may also visit us throughout the school year.
ICT
We use ICT in various aspects of the school day to enhance our learning. We use IWBs, iPads, chrome books and Beebots to explore and develop new skills in using ICT. We will be introduced to coding using Scratch this year.
