Tiny Caterpillars, Big Learning

5th May 2026

We have loved learning all about caterpillars and butterflies through the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Using this well‑loved text, the children explored the days of the week, sequencing key parts of the story, life cycles, and the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. They were also fascinated by the magical metamorphosis of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly!

The children created beautiful artwork inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, using fruits and vegetables that the Very Hungry Caterpillar enjoyed. Fine motor skills were developed through needle and thread work as we made stunning felt butterflies, while symmetry was explored through butterfly art and creative designs.

During GETGO Week, we enjoyed learning outdoors and used natural materials to create caterpillars and butterflies, making the experience even more memorable and hands‑on.

We are especially excited to have some very special visitors in our P2 classroom! We are looking after five caterpillars and, over the coming weeks, we will carefully observe their journey as they transform into beautiful butterflies. We can’t wait to see what happens next!
